Team Wales claimed a second medal in the Weightlifting with Laura Hughes in the women’s 75kg category, in a closely fought out contest between Emily Godley of England, Marie-Eve Beauchemin-Nadeau of Canada and Laura in the mix for a medal after her success at the Commonwealth Championships last year, every lift was vital in the race for the medals. Laura opened with 88kg snatch although successful the jury overturned the decision that required Laura to repeat 88kg for her second attempt before progressing to 91kg for her third and successful attempt, putting Laura in third place after the snatch and only 5kg behind the leader, Emily Godley. The clean & jerk saw Laura solidify her third place position with an opening lift of 112kg followed by 116kg to finish with a 207kg total for third place overall. The battle continued for silver and gold going down to the final lift of the group, which saw Emily Godley of England take gold with 126kg and a 222kg total beating Marie-Eve Beauchemin-Nadeau of Canada by 1kg, who totalled 221kg. In her Commonwealth Games debut Laura did a fantastic job securing Wale’s second medal, but first female weightlifting medal of these Games.
