21 Feb Seven Academies established across Wales
Weightlifting Wales is delighted to announce that seven centres have recently been awarded Academy status. Inclusive of Bangor University (the National Performance Centre for Wales), the academies provide excellent local provision encouraging people of all ages and from a variety of backgrounds, to participate in weightlifting; para powerlifting; and strength activities so that Wales becomes a strong and healthy nation.
The Academies include: Synergi Weightlifting, Crossfit Caerphilly, Coleg Sir Gar, Evolve Strength & Conditioning, SA1 Weightlifting, Holyhead & Anglesey Weightlifting Fitness Centre and Strength Academy Wales.
Whilst Weightlifting Wales is focused on the sports of weightlifting, para-powerlifting and strength conditioning, we support the achievement of excellence in all sports. The new academy centres will provide excellent opportunities for local athletes from an extremely wide variety of sports to develop their strength and conditioning with well qualified and experienced coaches
Coaches from academies will be invited to an Academy coaching network which will provide support, guidance and professional development
We are well aware that Weightlifting academies offer far more than just competitive Weightlifting and there is good work within local communities encouraging participation in a variety of strength activities with the aim of tackling obesity, improving self-confidence, raising self-esteem, developing social skills and ensuring well-being
We believe the Academy system will aid the competitive pathway and develop talented athletes to become elite weightlifters and Para Powerlifting to compete successfully at Wales and UK national events, and major international events
Academies will be involved in promoting our National Campaigns, beginning with International Weightlifting Day in collaboration with USA Weightlifting and being held on 11th April. We support the good work being carried out at affiliated clubs and encourage proactive clubs to work towards the academy standard if they are able to meet the criteria
