Weightlifting Wales have started their Commonwealth Games campaign at the Goldcoast with some solid performances from two Commonwealth Games debutants.
Day 1 saw Seth Casidsid competing in the Men’s 56kg category, opened confidently securing his opening snatch at 75kg, followed by 80kg, only missing his third attempt at 85kg. In the clean & jerk Seth opened comfortably with 95kg, moving successfully onto his second attempt at 106kg, only missing his third attempt at 116kg. In his first Commonwealth Games Seth finished in 9th with a 186kg total, in a tough field that the saw a number of Games record broken by the winner, IZHAR AHMAD Muhammad Azroy Hazalwa of Malaysia who took gold with a 261kg total.
Next up saw the most anticipated comeback in Britain with the return of Hannah Powell in the Women’s 48kg category. After sustaining a major injury at last years British Senior Championships to her elbow, Hannah’s Commonwealth Games hopes were on the line, but with patience and determination Hannah stepped back onto the platform to make her Commonwealth debut, Hannah went six for six, snatching 56kg and clean & jerking 72kg, totalling 128kg to finish 10th, despite not being at her best this was a huge success for Hannah and a great performance to mark her return to the stage and prepare for 2022.
