Team Wales at the Junior Battle round-up

This year’s 17th Junior Battle held annually in the picturesque countryside village of Lochen in Austria, was another successful event for Weightlifting Wales’ Junior Weightlifters. Despite a 6 hour delay in Frankfurt airport due to stormy weather, the team remained upbeat, positive and focused.

First up to compete in the Under 14’s category on Friday morning were lifters Daniel Davies, (12) and Liam Davies (13). Daniel had a fantastic competition, getting 6/6 lifts and personal bests with a 36kg Snatch and 50kg Clean and Jerk, this put Daniel into 3rd place in the lightweights category.

Liam also hit competition personal bests, improving his total from the British Youth Championships earlier this year by 17kg, with a 47kg Snatch and 63kg Clean and Jerk, and achieving silver place in the competition.

Following the two boys’ performances, was Seren Mitchell (14), who had a fantastic day with 5/6 lifts, a Snatch PB of 45kg and a huge improvement of 11kgs on her Clean and Jerk performance at the British Youths 2018 of 61kg, placing her in 6th place in the U’14’s category and breaking some Welsh youth records–all after less than one year of lifting!

In the final group for Friday were Catrin Jones (17) and Lauren Evans (17). Catrin also had a fantastic day, hitting a 49kg Snatch competition PB and an equal Clean and Jerk PB of 68kg, 5/6 lifts and won 3rd place in the U’17’s category. Lauren hit an excellent 55kg Snatch and narrowly missed 60kg Snatch twice which would have equaled her competition PB. Pulling it right back with her Clean and Jerks Lauren hit 3/3 lifts to finish on a very comfortable 74kg, just a kilo under her best, putting Lauren into 3rd place in the U20’s category.

The three remaining lifters for the competition were Sam Roberts (16), Leon Finnegan (14 ) and Harvey Morris (15) who lifted on Saturday morning. Sam Roberts achieved 5/6 lifts with a 66kg Snatch, very closely missing out on his third Jerk at 82kg which would have earned him the gold medal. Sam finished with an 80kg Clean and Jerk a silver medal, with competition PB’s after less than one year of lifting!

Leon Finnegan hit a 55kg Snatch and a 66kg Clean and Jerk, placing him in 4th place, improving his total from the Welsh Age Group Championships in 2017 by 25kg!

Finally, Harvey Morris achieved 6/6 lifts with a 63kg Snatch and 78kg Clean and Jerk, a 23kg improvement on his performance at the British Youths earlier this year and a silver medal overall.

Team Wales placed 6th overall in the team event, against some very competitive teams from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.

Weightlifting Wales are extremely proud of the entire team, alongside lifting excellently, the whole team conducted themselves in a professional and positive manner, and supported each member of their team equally, we hope they thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, from lifting in their first international competition to making new friendships along the way.
